OF ADVANCED ZOOLOGY
& BIOTECHNOLOGY
The
Department of Zoology enters the new academic year 2006-2007 after celebrating
the Silver Jubilee this year. It gets into a new form by changing its name to
Department of Advanced Zoology & Biotechnology and offers the undergraduate
programme.
FACULTY
Dr. S.
Swaminathan participated in the sixth annual discussion meeting on “Emerging
Technologies and Resistance Dynamics in Insects and Crop Plants” on 2nd
December 2005 at COSTED Auditorium, CLRI, Chennai. He also served as Resource
Person in the UGC Refresher Course for College Teachers at Ethiraj College for
Women, Chennai on 16th February 2006.
Dr. D.
Mony, Reader in Zoology, served as reviewer for the plus two Zoology and
Biology (English & Tamil) books published by The Tamilnadu Text Book
Society. He also authored books on ‘Explore Zoology’ for the Matriculation
students from Std VI to IX, published by Oxford Publishing Company.
Dr. K.
Kannan, Reader in Zoology, participated in Seminars conducted by ICARE, India,
LIFE, Loyola College, Department of Zoology of Meenakshi College for Women,
Quaide-Milath College for women and Stella Mari’s College for Women.
Dr. A.
Bojarajan, Reader in Zoology, presented a paper in the National Conference on
“Safe Environment for the Future Generation” at Auxilium College, Vellore, on 1st
& 2nd September, 2005.
FIELD TRIPS
AND LABORATORY VISITS
Field
Study and Educational Tours were organized at Tamil Nadu Fisheries Corporation
Intensive Carp Spawning Centre Station at Sathanoor Dam, for the benefit of II
& III year students of Zoology. They were also taken on a lab visit to Sri
Ramachandra Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Porur, Chennai. In
addition, they were exposed to the various techniques in Karyotyping, Molecular
Genetics and Biotechnology. The I year students were taken on a field trip to
Rameshwaram Island for on the spot study of live animals.
ZOOLOGY
ASSOCIATION
The Zoology
Association was inaugurated by Dr. P. Venkatesan, Asst. Vice Principal, SS
courses, Loyola College, Chennai. He motivated the students to catch up with
the recent trends in Biological Sciences.
Dr. A.
Karunanandan, Former Head of the Dept. of Historical Studies, delivered a
lecture on ‘Cultural Evolution of Man’.
Mrs. Mangalam, President, Pammal Exnora Women’s Club delivered a lecture on ‘Vermicomposting’.
Dr. M. H.
Subhashini, Principal, Valliammal College for Women Chennai-40, delivered the
Valedictory Address and distributed the prizes to the winners in various intra
departmental competitions held in Feb, 2006. She also gave a lecture on ‘Neo
Darwinism’.
Inter-class
Competitions in Spotter Identification, Debate and Sketching were also held to
encourage the students.
The
Association Activities also included Wildlife Census taking at Guindy National
Park and Vedanthangal Bird sanctuary.
