DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT STUDIES

 

The Department of Commerce was renamed as Department of Commerce and Management Studies reflecting the programs under its fold. It had student strength of 792 and faculty Strength of 34.  The students of the department performed well in academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The Department Association provided a platform to the students to enhance their prowess outside their classrooms.  The classroom activities acquired a new dimension, thanks to the autonomy, with students proving their mettle by paper presentations, management games, quiz, etc in their respective subjects.

Students’ Achievements in Academics:

The department students scaled new heights in the examinations of the Madras University and Professional accounting bodies, viz., ICAI, ICWAI,  and ICSI.

It is a creditable achievement that 96% of those appeared in the April 2005 University of Madras examination got their B.Com. degree and 87% their B.C.S. degree.

The performance of our students in the professional course examination has been spectacular. 46 students passed PE-1 and 18 students passed the PE-2 examination of ICAI. In PE-1, S. Prasanna of II B Com A secured All India 28th Rank. In PE-2 examination, S. Aswath secured All India 49th Rank. 18 students passed the Foundation level and 3 students the Intermediate level examination of ICAI. 10 students passed the Foundation and 1 student passed the Intermediate level of the ICSI.  A. Suneel, III B.Com. A passed the internationally acclaimed examination, CISA, which requires a passing minimum of 75%.

 

Students’ Achievements in Inter-Collegiate Competitions

The department kept its record in tact in the various Inter-Collegiate competitions. Our students won the overall trophy at COMET 2006, the inter-collegiate competition organised by Ethiraj College, Chennai, for the fourth consecutive time. The team also won the Overall trophy at ALTIUZ of Meenakshi College, Chennai. The team came a close second in the events organised by Ethiraj College (Department of BBM), Ethiraj College (Department of Corporate Secretaryship, Loyola College (Department of Commerce).

Prof. P.R. Gopinath passed the ICWAI Final examination of December 2005 qualifying as a Grad. CWA.
