DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT STUDIES

The Department of Commerce was renamed as Department of Commerce and Management Studies reflecting the programs under its fold. It had student strength of 792 and faculty Strength of 34. The students of the department performed well in academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The Department Association provided a platform to the students to enhance their prowess outside their classrooms. The classroom activities acquired a new dimension, thanks to the autonomy, with students proving their mettle by paper presentations, management games, quiz, etc in their respective subjects.

Department Student Association Activities:

• On 20^th July 2005, the Association was inaugurated with a presentation by Mr. Akhileshwaran, General Manager – Materials, Ashok Leyland Ltd., Chennai, profiling the Automobile Industry.
• On 10^th August 2005, a seminar on “Road to be taken - B-Schools or Professional Accounting Courses”, was presented by Mr. V. Pattabhi Ram, practising Chartered Accountant.
• “Soft Skills” a presentation on Interview skills by APTECH Ltd, Mylapore, Chennai-4, on 11^th August 2005.
• “Cost Accounting – A lucrative career” a presentation by Southern India Regional Council of Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, Chennai, on 16^th August 2005.
• On 20^th September 2005, Sri T.R.K Ramakrishna Rajha, Chairman, Telesis Global Solutions Ltd., Chennai, and Sri Sankaran Raghunathan, Chairman, Blueshift, and an alumnus of our College presented lectures on career guidance.
• On 15^th March 2006, an One-Day Seminar on Accounting Standards was conducted for students of the day and evening colleges. Former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, New Delhi, and our alumnus Sri R. Bupathy presented the Key-Note Address. Prof. M. P. Vijayakumar, a triplet in Accountancy Profession, gave an overview of all the Accounting Standards and elaborated upon AS-14 with examples. In the afternoon session, Prof. R. Sivakumar, our alumnus and Treasurer of the Managing Committee discussed about AS-3. The final session was handled by Prof. V. Pattabhi Ram, a renowned Chartered Accountant, who spoke on AS-17. Study materials on these standards were prepared and given to every participant.
• On 30^th and 31^st March 2006, a power point presentation on “Indirect Taxes – an Overview” was presented by our Department Faculty, Prof. P.R. Gopinath.

Students’ Achievements in Academics:

The department students scaled new heights in the examinations of the Madras University and Professional accounting bodies, viz., ICAI, ICWAI, and ICSI.

It is a creditable achievement that 96% of those appeared in the April 2005 University of Madras examination got their B.Com. degree and 87% their B.C.S. degree.

The performance of our students in the professional course examination has been spectacular. 46 students passed PE-1 and 18 students passed the PE-2 examination of ICAI. In PE-1, S. Prasanna of II B Com A secured All India 28^th Rank. In PE-2 examination, S. Aswath secured All India 49^th Rank. 18 students passed the Foundation level and 3 students the Intermediate level examination of ICAI. 10 students passed the Foundation and 1 student passed the Intermediate level of the ICSI. A. Suneel, III B.Com. A passed the internationally acclaimed examination, CISA, which requires a passing minimum of 75%.

Students’ Achievements in Inter-Collegiate Competitions

The department kept its record in tact in the various Inter-Collegiate competitions. Our students won the overall trophy at COMET 2006, the inter-collegiate competition organised by Ethiraj College, Chennai, for the fourth consecutive time. The team also won the Overall trophy at ALTIUZ of Meenakshi College, Chennai. The team came a close second in the events organised by Ethiraj College (Department of BBM), Ethiraj College (Department of Corporate Secretaryship, Loyola College (Department of Commerce).

Staff Achievements:

• Prof. R. Sriram passed the National Eligibility Test in Commerce of UGC conducted in June 2005. He also passed the MBA programme of Symbiosis Centre of Distance Learning.

Prof. P.R. Gopinath passed the ICWAI Final examination of December 2005 qualifying as a Grad. CWA.
