DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

The Economics Department continued its momentum from where it had left in 2004-2005. Again, for the second year running, more than five papers from the department were accepted for publication at the Indian Economic Conference held at Visakapatnam. The accent of the department being more on research, more than 25 students registered for their Ph.D. under various professors in the department. In this endeavour, the HoD, Prof. N. G. Shanker attended meetings for “Coordinated Research Project” of selected colleges in the city under the auspices of The Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust. The year 2005-2006 also saw a plethora of papers being presented by all the faculty members in various seminars, symposia and meetings.

ECONOMICS ASSOCIATION

The Economic Association’s activities started with its inauguration in August 2005 by Dr. Rajaram, one of our alumni. Dr. Rajaram gave an excellent exposition of how economists over the years brought about a marriage of Laissez faire ideology with the philosophy of maximizing satisfaction (utility) and how this has enabled the economists to explain successfully, the theory of consumption, production and exchange but not so successfully the field of distribution.
