CHEMICAL SOCIETY

The activities of the Chemical Society were inaugurated on 24th August 2005 by Dr. G. Venkoba Rao, Consultant Ex  GM (Technical) TNPL, T.N. with a lecture on ‘Dioxins’.

 

Dr. P. Raja Kumar, Professor, Department of Organic Chemistry, University of Madras, spoke on  Supramolecular Chemistry – Far or Near on 14th October 2005.

 

Dr. K.S. Nagaraja, Reader, Dept. of Chemistry, Loyola College, Madras, spoke on ‘ Materials of the Millenium’ on 26th December 2005.

 

Dr. V. Thiagrajan EndowmentIntercollegiate Quiz –was conducted by O. R. Ragunath – III B.Sc. Chemistry student on.9th January 2006.

 

K.S. Vasudevan, Senior Scientist, Mediclore Research Centre, spoke on Monoclonal Antibodies and their Applications” on 7th March 2006.

 

Dr. V. Thiagarajan Endowment lectures by Prof. A. K. Mishra, Dept. of  Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, on “Forescence Spectroscopy”  and Dr. G.N. Krishnakumari, Dept. of Chemistry, Guru Nanak College, Chennai, who spoke on “2-D –NMR and their Applications” were held on 15th March 2006..

 

Prof. S. T. Vijayaraghavan Endowment Quiz was conducted on 23rd March 2006.

CAREER PLACEMENT FOR CHEMISTRY STUDENTS

We wish to place on record that all the B.Sc. & M.Sc. graduates who graduated in the year 2005, have been employed in various firms.

In the current batch, B.Sc., 2006, 15 students were selected in firms like Cassel Labs Pvt. Ltd., Ajuba, Global Realty Outsourcing, Siemens, Cameo and 13 Students were finalized for the E-  Serve. Sanmar Speciality Chemicals, Malladi Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, Shriram Fibres, Metrolm Ltd. are some of the firms that offered jobs in R & D for our M.Sc. students and four M.Sc. students will be joining these companies in June, 2006.

 

STAFF ACTIVITIES

Dr. V.S. Srinivasan, Head of the Department, gave a talk on  “Synthesis and Applications of Cyclopropenes at Vaishnav College for Women in September 2005.

 

Prof. M. Balaji presented two papers in an International Conference held at Meerut in Feb. 2006. (i) Semi-empirical Calculation of Derivatives of Hydrazine and their Nucleophilic Character, and (ii) Gas Phase Tautomeric Studies of Acetophenone – a Semi-empirical Method.
