INDIRA GANDHI
NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY (IGNOU) STUDY CENTRE:
In May 2005, a study centre of
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the pioneer university in
distance education system in India, was started at Ramakrishna Mission
Vidyapith, Mylapore. Upon a Memorandum
of Understanding entered into between the Secretary of Vidyapith and the
IGNOU-Chennai Regional Centre, this proposal materialised. The Study Centre (with its Code No.SC-2505)
caters to the need for open university students undergoing degree programmes,
such as, B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., and B.T.S., post-graduate programmes, such as,
M.A. and M.Com., professional courses, such as, M.B.A., P.G.D.I.B.O.,
P.G.D.F.M., P.G.D.H.R.M., P.G.D.M.M. and P.G.D.O.M., and computer courses such
as M.C.A. and B.C.A.. Prof. A.S.
Kannan, Head of the Department of Commerce and Management Studies, has been
appointed the Co-ordinator of the Study Centre. He is assisted by 4 Assistant Co-ordinators, 4 Assistants, 4
Attenders and a Safaiwala, who are all paid honorarium by the IGNOU.
In the first batch of July-December
2005 session, around 948 students were allotted to our centre. Counselling sessions were successfully
conducted with the help of about fifty qualified and experienced counsellors,
who also evaluated the assignments submitted by the students, as a part of the
evaluation system of IGNOU. For
January-June 2006 session, around 878 students have been allotted. Practical classes for M.C.A. and B.C.A.
students were conducted in our college Commerce-Computer Lab on Saturdays and
Sundays.
